Lawn and Ornamental Care in Florida

One great thing about living in Florida is how our climate allows us to grow so many different types of grasses, trees, and shrubs. The great weather can also bring unwanted stressors to your lawn, like weeds, which can choke out your grass, and fertilization issues from frequent rains. Palms, citrus trees, tropical fruit trees, and countless other species can thrive in our warm environment—however, these trees are all particularly vulnerable to pest infestation. If you’re seeing issues such as leaf drop, dying trees, sooty substances on leaves, or any other abnormalities, pests are likely to blame. You can count on our lawn care services in Florida to keep your grass, trees, and shrubs healthy and protected. lawn care and weed control technician

Watering Tips for a Healthy Lawn

There are a lot of common misconceptions about lawn care in Florida. For instance, did you know that it’s more dangerous to over-water your lawn than underwater it? In fact, over-watering can be a primary cause of weed growth and lawn disease. While it’s best to consult with a professional lawn care technician in Florida to determine a proper watering schedule for your lawn, here are some easy tips put together by our team to help you figure out how to best keep your lawn hydrated. While you're at it, visit our blog to learn more about the watering schedule in Florida.

  • Water between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m.
  • Water less during the winter, as your lawn will lose less water in the cold weather.
  • Be sure to factor rainfall into your watering schedule.
  • Listen to your lawn—when it needs water, it will begin to wilt!

Common Signs of Lawn Pests

Because Florida is home to so many different types of insects, it can be easy to become overwhelmed by trying to identify what is plaguing your lawn. However, most common lawn pests in Florida leave distinct calling cards you can recognize. It’s always best to get a professional pest exterminator's opinion on correcting lawn problems, but keep an eye out for these symptoms:

  • Browning and/or yellowing patches of turf.
  • Loose sod.
  • Chewed grass blades.
  • Raised ridges of dirt on your turf, visible tunnel entries.
  • Areas of turf that appear dry.

Different pests have different behaviors, so it's important to know what to look for in each of them. Here, we've compiled a list of signs different lawn pests give:

  • Chinch bugs: Large patches of brown or rust color turf.
  • Grub worms: Mosaic patterns of turf. You can easily lift the sod as if there were no roots attached to the soil.
  • Sod webworms: Partly chewed grass blades and the presence of fecal pellets on the blades of grass. These are particularly easy to see early in the morning when the grass is covered in dew.
  • Mole crickets: Soft areas of turf with tunnels and uprooted grass.

Regular preventive applications of insecticides are necessary to control lawn pest infestations. Chinch Bugs, Grub Worms, and Sod Webworms are the most destructive to all varieties of St Augustine grasses (Floratam, Pursley, Seville, etc.) where Mole Crickets are the most destructive to all varieties of Bahia grasses (Argentine, Pensacola, etc.)
